Snow and ice do no damage. Freeze-thaw does, but only to a base that was built badly.
Neither harms turf. Fibres are UV and temperature stable across a far wider range than a Kentucky winter produces. Snow sits on the surface and melts through as it would on any ground, and the turf underneath is unchanged.
Turf is also usable sooner after snowmelt than grass. There is no mud, so the yard is walkable while a natural lawn is still a swamp.

This is the genuine winter issue, and it has nothing to do with the turf itself.
Lexington crosses the freezing point repeatedly through winter rather than staying frozen. Each cycle, water held in the base freezes and expands, lifting the material above it, then thaws and leaves a void. Repeated over several winters, a base holding water develops ruts, low spots and a wavy surface.
A base that drains properly does not hold the water that drives this. That is why base construction matters more in Kentucky than in dry or consistently frozen climates, and why we build with open-graded aggregate, positive slope and compaction in lifts. More on drainage and clay soil.
This is where turf wins most visibly. Natural fescue goes dormant and brown from roughly November through March. Turf looks in February exactly as it does in June, which for a front yard is four months of the year that no longer look neglected.
Entirely feasible. Base work is unaffected by cold, and adhesives cure more slowly but perform normally with the right products. The only genuine obstacle is frozen or waterlogged ground, which can delay excavation by a few days.
Winter scheduling is easier and lead times are shorter than the spring rush. If you want turf ready for spring, booking in January or February is the sensible move.
