Very little is required. What little there is makes a visible difference.
Artificial turf is low maintenance, not no maintenance. The difference between turf that looks new at year ten and turf that looks tired at year five is about an hour of attention a few times a year.
A hose-down every few weeks in warm weather keeps dust and pollen from building up in the fibres. Lexington's spring pollen load makes this more worthwhile here than in most places.
Leaves and twigs off with a blower or plastic leaf rake. Never a metal rake — it damages fibres. Left in place, organic debris breaks down into the infill and eventually supports weed growth on top of the turf.
A stiff-bristled push broom, against the grain, once or twice a year on the routes people actually walk. This is the single highest-value maintenance action and almost nobody does it.
Most things rinse off. Grease and oil need a mild detergent. Nothing abrasive and no solvents.
Mechanical brushing lifts and separates fibres far more thoroughly than hand brushing, and redistributes infill evenly. Worth doing every two to three years on a residential lawn, annually on heavy-use or pet areas.
Infill migrates and settles over the years. Topping it up restores blade support, improves feel underfoot, and extends fibre life by reducing the load on the blades themselves.
For pet areas, playgrounds and commercial sites, a full clean with an enzymatic treatment neutralises anything the infill has held onto.
Weeds never grow through properly installed turf, but they will occasionally seed on top of it in accumulated organic debris. Easy to remove, easier to prevent by clearing leaves.
Snow and ice do no harm and generally do not need clearing. If you want a path, use a plastic shovel or a broom. Never metal, and never rock salt — it does not damage the turf but it fouls the infill.
Maintenance visits for a typical residential yard run $150 to $400 depending on size and what is needed. Annual plans are available for pet areas and commercial sites. Call for a quote on your property.
