Home Services Turf Around Pools

Grass and swimming pools are a poor combination. Clippings blow in and clog the skimmer. Wet feet carry mud onto the deck. The strip closest to the water stays saturated and turns to mush by July.

Why turf works here

No clippings, ever. Nothing tracks in but water. The surface drains within minutes of splash-out, and it stays visually consistent all season, which matters more around a pool than anywhere else in a yard.

Chlorine and saltwater

Quality turf is UV-stabilised and unaffected by chlorinated or salt water at pool concentrations. Salt systems are actively easier on turf than on natural grass, which struggles with the runoff.

Drainage matters more here

Pool surrounds take repeated volume rather than occasional rain. We build a more open base with positive slope away from the deck, so splash-out moves through fast rather than sitting under the turf. On Lexington clay this often means an additional drainage layer.

Heat and comfort

Bare feet around a pool is the one place surface temperature genuinely matters. We recommend cooling-technology turf for full-sun pool surrounds, and it stays noticeably cooler than concrete or stone decking. A rinse drops the temperature within seconds.

Design

Turf integrates cleanly with paver decking, stamped concrete and natural stone. A turf border between the coping and the fence line is a common approach — soft underfoot, visually green, and no maintenance in the one part of the yard nobody wants to be mowing.

What it costs

Pool surrounds price similarly to standard lawn installation at $7 to $14 per square foot, with drainage requirements the main variable. See pricing.

Answers

Common questions

Will chlorine damage artificial turf?
No. Quality turf is UV-stabilised and unaffected by chlorine or salt at pool concentrations.
Does it get hot for bare feet?
It runs warmer than grass in full sun but cooler than concrete or stone decking. Cooling-technology turf helps significantly, and a rinse drops the temperature in seconds.
How does splash-out drain?
Through the turf backing into a graded base built with a more open aggregate than a standard lawn, sloped away from the deck.
